Clone army: Artist's 3D printable mask tricks facial recognition software
Biometric identification is becoming more prevalent and powerful, so artist Leo Selvaggio decided to take a novel approach to combat what he views as the growing surveillance state. Selvaggio created a 3D printable mask that is a photorealistic copy of his own face, allowing users to trick facial recognition software and conceal the wearer's identity. The idea for the project struck while the artist was living in Chicago, which has over 20,000 networked cameras accessible by police. RT's Ameera David speaks to Selvaggio and learned more about his motivations.

Water-rich gem points to vast 'oceans' beneath Earth's surface, study suggests
The first terrestrial discovery of ringwoodite confirms the presence of massive amounts of water 400 to 700 kilometers beneath Earth's surface. Ringwoodite is a form of the mineral peridot, believed to exist in large quantities under high pressures in the transition zone. Ringwoodite has been found in meteorites but, until now, no terrestrial sample has ever been unearthed because scientists haven't been able to conduct fieldwork at extreme depths.

I know first-hand that Facebook's advertising model is deeply flawed. When I paid to promote my page I gained 80,000 followers in developing countries who didn't care about Veritasium (but I wasn't aware of this at the time). They drove my reach and engagement numbers down, basically rendering the page useless. I am not the only one who has experienced this. I thought I would demonstrate that the same thing is still happening now by creating Virtual Cat (http://www.facebook.com/MyVirtualCat). I was surprised to discover something worse - false likes are coming from everywhere, including Canada, the US, the UK, and Australia. So even those carefully targeting their campaigns are likely being duped into spending real money on fake followers. Then when they try to reach their followers they have to pay again.
And it's possible to be a victim of fake likes without even advertising. Pages that end up on Facebook's "International Suggested Pages" are also easy targets for click-farms seeking to diversify their likes. http://tnw.co/NsflrC

An organisation called the Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF) is planning to give free internet access to every person on Earth.
By using datacasting technology to send data over wide radio waves from hundreds of satellites called the Outernet, the New York-based company says they'll be able to broadcast the Internet around the world.
The Outernet team aims to start deploying the satellites into Earth orbit in June 2015.

Rainforests are being destroyed for palm oil and pushing the last wild orangutans to the brink of extinction. At Rainforest Action Network our goal is to collect 60,600 photo petitions - that's one person for each orangutan remaining in the wild. We'll deliver these photos to the Snack Food 20, the top snack food companies that are using this Conflict Palm Oil in our food.
RAN teamed up with Free Range Studios to produce this 2 minute video to launch The Last Stand of the Orangutan: The Power is in Your Palm - a new national campaign exposing the US snack food industry for putting Conflict Palm Oil into the food products we buy everyday.

Palm oil is found in roughly half the products sold in grocery stores and its production is now one of the leading causes of rainforest destruction worldwide. It is the single biggest threat driving orangutans toward extinction and is responsible for widespread human rights violations including displacement of Indigenous Peoples, land conflicts with forest dependent communities, and forced and child labor.
On top of that, deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia, where palm oil is grown, is pushing more carbon pollution into earth's atmosphere each year than all the cars, trucks, planes, trains and ships in the United States combined. In fact, due to deforestation, Indonesia has the third largest greenhouse gas emissions behind China and the United States.
But we can do something about it!
The most popular and influential snack food companies using Conflict Palm Oil, dubbed the "Snack Food 20" by RAN, control some of America's most well known household brands including Pepsi, Heinz, Hershey's, Kraft and Smuckers. They spend millions a year to instill brand loyalty and trust in their customers - us - and they really care what we think. It is crucial that these companies hear from you right now. Tell them that you will not stand for Conflict Palm Oil in your food. Together we can convince these brands to take action and change the destructive way Conflict Palm Oil is grown.
